A drink at the bar that inspired the grand old man of American letters is a fine way to soak up the bygone days of Parisian bohemia.

The bar at The Ritz in Paris was where Ernest Hemingway whiled away many a drinking hour and decades later it has been renamed in his honour. A piano bar, it has been restored to its original appearance with rich wood panelling and leather armchairs. Tourists dressed to the hilt order fine wines and listen to fine classics. This bar is a treat not only because the drinks are of the highest quality but also because the prices are truly stratospheric: Euro 23 (Rs  1,471) for a cocktail. Save a visit for a special occasion and allow the eccentric and excellent barman Colin Field to look after your every need. You will be following in the footsteps of that most prodigious of sundowners, Hemingway!

Ajna bar

Formerly called the Buddha Bar, New York's dynamic, vast, three-room playground exudes a foxy Asian flair and a jawdropping design. Stop to gawk at the towering black-lacquered Buddha resting peacefully under the pyramidal skylight, towering over the well-heeled crowd in floating VIP pagodas. Other charms include the lush lounge bar, the many cocktail tables, and the opium beds. There's no cover or list, and there is a glass-encased standing lounge for smokers and a gift shop to purchase the bar's eclectic, world beats soundtrack. A Big Apple landmark.

Der raum

For those of you with no grasp of German (even though the restaurant's in Melbourne), Der Raum means The Room. It is infinitely hipper than your average Bavarian Beerhall. Cocktails are the thing here: innovative and made with fresh fruit rather than cordials and syrups. Pop across on a Thursday and watch the bartenders get experimental. Drinks here may be costly but the expertise is definitely worth paying for.
