The movie, starring John Abraham in the lead, along with Nargis Fakhri and Raashi Khanna, revolves around the Sri Lankan civil war and has been praised for its intellectual content.
Though the movie courted controversy after Tamil activists alleged that it presents LTTE cadres as terrorists, 'Madras Cafe' released on 1,200 screens and impressed movie goers.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: "'Madras Cafe' collected approximately Rs 20.42 crore to Rs 20.67 crore net in its opening weekend. On Friday, it earned Rs 5.17 crore, Saturday Rs 7 crore and on Sunday Rs 8.25 crore to Rs 8.50 crore."
Co-produced by Abraham and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, the thriller was reportedly made at a budget of less than Rs 10 crore.
According to Boxofficeindia.com analysts, with Wednesday being a holiday on account of Janamashtami, 'Madras Cafe' can hope to take its first week figures to around Rs 32 crore nett.
The film is expected to continue its strong run at premium multiplexes even as Prakash Jha-directed 'Satyagraha' hits the screens this Friday.
