Ceri Rocca, vehicle interior stylist and consultant with Design Q, the well-known UK-based aerospace designing firm, tells you how to make the interiors of an aircraft resemble a home or a luxury hotel suite.

A conference room
The look: I put myself in my client’s shoes and look at the key things that influence the journey, as well as the elements in a house that can be incorporated into the interior—almost like an extension of the home. The design must embrace technology, culture and something of the eloquence of the executive’s profile and personality.

State-of-the-art drawing room
The materials used: High-quality materials that are hand-crafted and custom-made are used to do up the interiors. Carpets are specially woven to fit into each aircraft and furniture with timber veneers is created (timber cannot be used in aircraft). All materials are fire-tested and crash-tested, and this can be a long and expensive process.

Customised seating arrangements
The subtle touch: Small touches are just as important, as the owners’ interests have to be kept in mind throughout the journey. Hidden glass holders, a secret library, seat warmers or massage tools embedded in the chairs are good examples—I’ve known some VIPs who have even requested a jacuzzi.
The cost: Whether spending Rs 8 crore or Rs 80 crore (usually costs do not go beyond this, except in very rare cases), I believe in offering passengers exciting and innovative ideas that open up a wealth of possibilities.
