A piece of car

A piece of car

As electronics becomes increasingly commoditised, a host of top-end car makers are tying up with consumer electronics firms to emblazon their brands on laptops and phones. We take a look at what is out there and whether they are worth the extra cash.
  •  Sagem Porsche Design P9521

Gadget you would love to have
This phone might wear the Porsche Design brand, but the studio has been designing accessories for a while. You can, if you want, buy a Porsche Design smoking pipe, but here are a couple of things to know about the device. Its casing is milled out of a single solid aluminium block. The screen can rotate a full 180 degrees, making it a good digital camera. Immense amounts of work have gone into the typography and user interface. It also has fingerprint identification. So, no need for fancy PIN numbers—the phone will be pretty much useless if you lose it. However, unlike most Sagem phones, which are low-to-mid-end devices, this will not be available at any old store near you.

Available at: Porsche World outlets in Delhi and Mumbai (March 2008)
Price: Rs 50,000 plus (estimated)

  • Fly Hummer H1

No fancy tricks here; the phone does have a touch screen input, but it is a fairly run-of-the-mill phone otherwise. Decent camera, decent user interface, decent battery life, decent everything. It does not have the posh look of the Porsche, because it isn’t that posh; this is a bog-standard mid-end phone with a few nice tricks and good looks. It isn’t that expensive, either.

Available at: Most major electronics retailers
Price: The device has an MRP of Rs 16,000, but is available at some dealers for around Rs 10,000

Acer Ferrari 1100

Acer and Ferrari have a relationship going back quite a few years and the Acer Ferrari 1100 is the latest laptop to emerge from this partnership, which also includes AMD, since the chipmaker is a long-time partner of the Scuderia. This is an ultra-portable laptop and thanks to the carbon-fibre cover, this machine weighs under 2 kg. But don’t mistake it for a slouch; despite its small form factor and low weight, this is a pocket rocket. Think of it as the Kimi Raikkonen of the laptop world.

You can't keep your hands off it

Available at: Premium Computer and Electronics outlets
Price: Rs 79,999 (plus taxes)

ASUS Lamborghini VX2

Forget the laptop; just the laptop bag that comes with this computer will take your breath away. The laptop is a stunningly beautiful piece of work. And this computer isn’t just about looks—it has some serious number-crunching power with a zippy processor, a snappy graphics card and lots of memory, which even makes Windows Vista run relatively quickly. And even though it costs one per cent the price of a Lamborghini, it is possibly the most expensive original laptop available in India today.

Available at: Premium Computer and Electronics outlets
Price: Rs 2.4 lakh (plus taxes)
