EQUESTRIAN
Carnation race

If the sound of thundering hooves and the sight of flying turf sets your pulse racing, be sure to tune in to the last of the three premier horse races to be held in the first week of June. The Belmont Stakes is traditionally held after the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, held five and three weeks before Belmont respectively. So be prepared for flashy suits and designer hats at this utterly glamorous thoroughbred race. Held since 1867, this prestigious race also boasts of being the most viewed across the world. It's also called "Run For the Carnations" as the winning horse is showered in white carnations after the race. The legendary horse Secratariat holds the speed record here since 1973.

SUPERCAR

Deadly Fireball
Karl Reindler
Karl Reindler
When things go terribly wrong on the racetrack, motorsport enthusiasts are brought face to face with the dangers of the sport. A faulty car or neglected warning is all it takes for the sport to turn nasty, as the death of racing legend Ayrton Senna proved in 1994. Australian motor car racing recently survived a rude jolt when the V8 Supercar driver Karl Reindler's Commodore burst into flames at the Barbagallo Raceway near Perth early last month. Reindler was rear-ended by a rival after his car stalled right at the beginning of the race. The Commodore then burst into a dramatic ball of flame, leaving onlookers aghast. Quick response from nearby mechanics and the superior quality of Reindler's body-suit ensured that he was pulled out of the crash relatively unharmed. He has received first degree burns to his face and third degree burns to his left hand for which he may need a skin graft. Reindler is expected to be out of action for the rest of the season.

F1
New tyres

All eyes are on the Valencia Grand Prix to be held between 24th and 26th June on one of Europe's youngest racing tracks. To a large extent that's because Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli will be introducing one of it's three new tyres at this track. Valencia is a street circuit, much like the older Monaco circuit, but it's also faster. With this in mind Pirelli's medium soft tyre will be launched here. The other two variations of the company's patented PZero tyre compound--the super soft and the hard tyres--will be seen at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone later this year.

SAILING
Sailing week

Kieler Woche's 129-year history is littered with many landmarks, many of which have nothing to do with sailing. From the enduring love of the German Emperor Wilhelm II for the Woche, to the interruption of the 1914 race because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the outbreak of World War I, the Kieler Woche (German for week) is always eventful. The largest of Germany's Volksfests (a mass event that combines both a festival and a carnival) this year's Woche promises to be bigger than before. To be held beteen 18th and 26th June, the race will see the introduction of a new Sailing Arena in the middle of Kiel for the speedsailing races of the Tornado class yachts. The Woche promises to be a great cultural week as well, with organisers tying up with various performance venues as well as international performers and bands to make sure that the fun doesn't stop even after the racing stops for the day. With a recent upsurge in popularity, the festival is making arrangements to recieve over three million visitors over a period of eight days. It is without doubt a great way to enjoy sailing, with great music and food to match. An event one should try not to miss if in the vicinity.

The best race
Although we're approaching the halfway mark of the F1 season, most spectators and drivers agree that the Shanghai Grand Prix held in April was the best race of the season so far. Not only did Red Bull's Mark Webber begin in 18th place and drive magnificently to come in third, but Lewis Hamilton of McLaren also broke Sebastian Vettel's brilliant run of four straight wins with some great manoeuvering.
