Classic watches

There was a return to elegance this year. Complications were cleanly hidden underneath dials that were smart and sparse. Here's a look at chronographs that will become an instant classic.

Rolex
MILGAUSS GV

Known as the 'Scientist's Watch', this is an anniversary edition of the Rolex Milgauss. It measures 40 mm in diameter and has the signature lightning bolt second hand. The sapphire crystal is tinted green. The 3, 6 and 9 markers are an orange luminova, and the outer ring of the dial has Arabic seconds in increments of 5. The watch has the COSC certified 3131 automatic winding movement and is water resistant up to 100 m. Price: Rs. 3.27 lakh

TAG Heuer
CARRERA 1887 CHRONOGRAPH

The Carrera 1887 Chronograph is the 21st century version of the iconic watch created by Jack Heuer in 1964. Reinvented for TAG Heuer's 150th anniversary, it is faithful to the original in design, but its radical new "engine", the Calibre 1887, turns it into a 3rd Millennium chronograph in terms of size, performance and accuracy. The Calibre 1887 is a highly advanced column wheel/oscillating pinion integrated chronograph movement platform, manufactured in-house. Vibrating 28,800 times per hour, the Calibre 1887's 39-jewel, 29.3 mm x 7.13 mm movement comprises 320 components and has a 50-hour power reserve. Price: Rs. 1.74 lakh

Zenith
ELITE 681 ULTRA THIN

This model features a new ultra-thin 40 mm case housing the ideally suited extra-slim (3.81 mm) Elite 681 self-winding calibre. The case comes in a choice of 18-ct rose gold or stainless steel, while the sapphire crystal exhibition back provides a fascinating view of the movement. The domed sapphire watch glass is glare-proofed on both sides to enhance readability of the facetted hour-markers, sword-shaped hour and minutes hands as well as small seconds at 9 o'clock. Price: Rs. 5.03 lakh

Panerai
RADIOMIR ORO ROSA

The Radiomir Oro Rosa combines unmistakable design with the new mechanical movement, the P.999, designed by Panerai in-house. The new hand-wound movement features 19 jewels and has a 60-hour power reserve. The 42 mm case in pink gold is slightly smaller than the historic Radiomir watches. The thickness has also been reduced thanks to the development of the new movement. The result is a thinner, lighter watch, perfect for the most elegant situations while not betraying the watch's military origins and sporting character. Price: Rs. 7.50 lakh
