Fit for the feet

Fit for the feet

Can a great pair of shoes really enhance your look? What shoes should you wear if you are short or thin or if you are going to a formal dinner or a casual do? Simone Battiwala, manager of Fendi India and a styling and fashion advisor, tells you just that.

Apair of shoes can make or break any outfit. The correct pair of shoes completes the appearance of an outfit. Your shoes should, of course, be of the correct size, fit well and look presentable.

The long and short of it

Going to work

Lace-ups again are the most common formal shoes, but many men are more comfortable with a formal pair of moccasins. When buying a pair of shoes for work or to wear all day, the most important point to consider is comfort and durability.

For a woman, again comfort is the key word. Choose a pair with a small heel like a kitten heel or a wedge as it gives better support. Shoe styles like mules, pumps and peeptoe shoes are great all-day shoes. For those who choose traditional Indian clothes for work, look for a pair of comfortable mules or sandals.

A foot too wide

For people with feet that are broader than ‘normal’, look for shoes that support your feet. Stay away from shoes or sandals with a thick strap across the foot. Instead, opt for one with two or more thinner straps, as a single thick strap could make your foot look broader.

— As told to Deepti Khanna Bose

Most men’s shoe styles will do well on a tall person.

They should, however, stay away from shoes that have a prominent pointed toe.

For women, it’s a bit different as even tall women do not shy away from a pair of heels.

Often, taller women have larger feet, and, hence, look for shoes like a pair of kitten heels or peep-toe pumps.

For those men who do not have the height to boast of, a pair of formal shoes has to be lace-ups.

For an illusion of height and length, one could choose a pair with a slightly pointed toe in the same colour or tone as the trouser.

For women, a pair of stilettos or pumps is the best.

The shoe heel should be slender and proportioned to the style of the shoe.

One should be careful though, as a platform heel could make heavier calves look bigger.
