(THREE COLUMNS)
Steven Soderbergh’s stylish noir homage to Casablanca finds a journalist (George Clooney) travelling to postwar Berlin for a story. There he runs into his beautiful, embittered one-time love Cate Blanchett and gets embroiled in a saga of stealth, deception and murder. Shot beautifully in black and white, the movie is high on style, and despite its homage to Hollywood’s golden era of the 1940s, the movie is wonderfully contemporary in its portrayal of emotions. The behind-thescenes feature gives an in-depth account of how Soderbergh painstakingly created the set to match the original book’s descriptions. A fascinating watch.

LES DIABOLIQUES
The DVD release of the original 1955 movie by Frenchman Henri-Georges Clouzot shows just why it is so vastly superior to the Sharon Stone-starrer. A bold movie for the ‘50s, it is a claustrophobic tale set in a seedy school. The headmaster is a villainous man and both his wife and his lover number among the teachers. The two women hatch a plot to drown him and make it look like an accident. They manage to do both but are horrified when the body disappears. A fascinating tale of whodunit begins, and the tension continues till the end.

PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN— AT WORLD’S END

Nobody knows if the Pirates series will stop with this, the third instalment of the hugely popular movie franchise. But one thing's for sure—for sheer scale it will be difficult to top this one. The movie picks up from where the last one left off—led by Keira Knightley, a rag-tag group of pirates set off to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones’s Locker, where he has been imprisoned. They sail off the edge of the world to find Depp in a white beach conversing with different versions of himself.
