Moves and shakes, Bollywood style

Moves and shakes, Bollywood style

They are complex moves, no doubt. But once mastered, they won’t just make hitting the dance floor a more pleasurable event, but also make your body that much more fit and flexible. Boogie away with these fun moves recommended by fitness expert Shaira Bhan.

Shimmy

What is it: Though considered to be a part of many western dances, the move has made its way into our Bollywood blockbusters.

You must have seen Katrina Kaif gyrating in this fashion in Namastey London.

How to do it: The body is held still, except for the shoulders, which are alternated back and forth. So, when the right shoulder goes back, the left one comes forward.

To be done at a fast pace, the move engages the chest and helps in loosening up the shoulder blades and toning up the shoulders.

It may help to hold the arms out slightly bent at the elbow, and when the shoulders are moved, the hands should be kept in the same position.

How it helps: It helps tone shoulder muscles.

Hip Shake

Hip shake

What is it: Think Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, or Govinda in his comic capers. Our masala movies and their song and dance routines are incomplete without that shaking of the hip. Hip movements help in toning and strengthening your stomach and hip muscles.

How to do it: Hip moves can be done in three ways: the forward back motion of the hips done with knees bent, shaking them side by side or doing hip rolls, which means moving your hips forward, left, back and right, without stopping, in a circular motion.

How it helps: Helps tone stomach and hip muscles.

Chest moves

What is it: Our Bollywood beauties have been doing them since time immemorial, and Tata Young scorched the screen with her chest movements in the chartbuster Dhoom Machale.

How to do it: Just like the hip movements, chest movements can be done in a forward back motion, side by side or in the form of chest rolls.

Move your chest forward, left, back, right without stopping in a circular motion. You're downright amused when you see our Bollywood stars doing them, but these chest movements are highly recommended.

How it helps: These moves help slim down your waistline, while targetting your upper torso as well.

Sidekicks

Sidekicks

What is it: The sidekicks use a brushing technique and when practised it looks like you're brushing something off the floor.

How to do it: Lie down on the floor. Keeping one leg on the ground, raise the other leg and try drawing a line, with your toes pointing towards the ceiling.

Keep the knees straight and repeat the motion with the other leg.

How it helps: The move helps you get leaner leg muscles and also helps tone and strengthen your inner thighs, and hips.
