Suits: Italian job

As Autumn/Winter collections make their way to the stores, we take a look at two distinctly Italian styles that are coming your way.
High Style
Versace
The fashion house’s Menswear collection for this season is being widely acclaimed as no-frills, sharp and to the point. It’s not hard to see why. While the collection wears its climate change chic well with contrasting pieces in all-white and allblue ensembles, the real story is their wearability.
Look One: The steel grey Versace suit, which is as classic as they come. But even here there are tweaks, with the jackets cut for brevity and teamed with, well, polo necks. Don’t be surprised to see George Clooney parading one soon.
Look Two: Polo necks feature in a big way in the collection, along with long, darkhued overcoats secured fast with belts and sash, cut sharply and oozing elegance. The trousers become roomy and comfortable, with no-nonsense brogues and oxfords.
Look Three: The beautiful white wool coat teamed with a knitted polo neck. When Winter collections focus a bit too much on dark hues and tones, Versace’s bright light colours are a welcome change.
True Stripes
Ermenegildo Zegna
They are famed for their fabrics and distinct Italian looks. For the Autumn/Winter 2009 collection, Zegna has gone pinstriped with a vengeance.
Look One: Pinstripes have always been the last word in grown-up power dressing, and the Couture Burgundy Suit hovers somewhere between the sheer will to power and Mafia Chic. The thinner the stripes, the meaner the look. Coupled with patent leather gloves and the severe slickedback hair, it looks like a great buy for the season.
Look Two: The Double-breasted Trofeo 600 woollen suit. The cut is slimmer than traditional doublebreasted suits, and the length is subtly reduced. This is easily the pick of the line, a connoisseur’s favourite—the famed Trofeo fabric woven with 15 per cent silk, teamed with flat-pleated trousers.
Look Three: But when it comes to the Navy and Brown E Zegna collection, the emphasis is on fatter stripes, which can be worn casually as well as formally as in this ensemble.
