SUITS

If you think suits this season, think flamboyant, maybe even retro. When the leading fashion houses premiered their collections for this season, the trend was clear— austere, yet bold. Hence, the focus on sculpted fits; fits that outline the silhouette. Take this suit for example. It’s a double-breasted tweed suit from Ermenegildo Zegna that’s tapered to accentuate the V-line of the male torso.

Peak Lapel: The peak lapel is very much in now, adding a dash of flamboyance to the suit, and accentuating the shoulders. In fact, even regular, nondouble breasted suits are sporting these lapels these days.

Waist: The waist is intentionally narrowed, especially when the suit is fully buttoned. This helps achieve a tapered look and outline the figure.

Fabric: Surely not to be worn any time but winter, the rich tweed fabric helps add detail to offset the straight lines of the suit. With other fabrics, be it wool or cashmere or wool-silk blends, the attention is on the fall.

Trousers: This particular pair of trousers has a very Seventies flared bottom to balance the tapering waist.

REAR VENTS

When it comes to rear vents, the competition is between two styles—the American and the English. While traditional American jacket designs go for a single rear vent, the traditional English preference is for double vents. And if trends are anything to go by, the Brit way is winning the battle this season. Originally designed to facilitate horse riding, double vents give you easier access to the pockets, and also emphasise the line of the body.

TIES

Ties, like belts, are integral to your look. So much so, that even if you go without a tie with your suit, its absence makes a statement. So what’s new this season? Well, for a change, this fall don’t bend to drabness. Light up your style with bright horizontal stripes, solid colours and Americanstyle monograms and paisley. Keep it colourful, and keep it classy.

SHIRTS

Here’s a shocker. The shirt most in demand this season is the classic plain white shirt. Why? Because a dazzling white shirt will go with most suits and jackets; and because it is the most unfussy way to dress up. Whether at a business do or at a party, the white shirt will stand out. But it doesn’t end there. Other sober colours are also in.

WATCHES

Welcome (back) to the world of the leather straps. After flirting with chunky metallic shapes and dials teeming with detail and diamonds, it’s now back to the classic look of straight straps and unfussy round dials.

BOOTS AND SHOES

Forget about shoes for a while. The hot comeback item of the season is boots. From the super-stylish ankle length Chelsea boots, to sturdy but flashy tan boots, they definitely add that zing to your suit that your formal shoes cannot. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to mothball your formal shoes. The blacks and tans are eternal and will always add to your class quotient.
