Equity Funds
The assets under management (AUM) of all mutual funds were Rs 5,93,386 crore on 31 March 2012. Equity funds (diversified equity and tax-saving funds) accounted for Rs 1,82,076 crore.
Hybrid Funds
Hybrid funds, also known as balanced funds, is an important category for retail investors as schemes like MIPs and asset allocation funds come in this category. This category accounted for 3 per cent of the mutual fund industry's total AUM till 31 March 2012.
Debt Funds
Debt funds accounted for Rs 3,75,000 crore, or 65 per cent, of the mutual fund indusry's total AUM. However, retail participation remain low in such funds as majority of the investments come from institutions and corporate houses.
