IIM Kozhikode, ranked 6, is back in the top 10 ranking

sixth this year. It last figured in the top 10 list in 2002. And there are other reasons too.

It has made up for its relatively isolated location by pioneering satellite-based postgraduate diploma programmes in management for executives, so they no longer have to be physically present on the campus to participate.

Around 300 executives are currently enrolled in the main two-year programme - there are some short term ones, too - paying a total fee of Rs 5.25 lakh each. "Our fee income from the satellite programmes has gone up 20 times in the past two and a half years," says IIM-K Director Debashis Chatterjee.
IIM-K also boasts greater gender diversity than most other management institutes - this year 35 per cent of the 341 students admitted were women.
"In the past decade, IIMs had an average of around 10 per cent women students," says Chatterjee.

The current passion of the 46-year-old director, who has also written five books, most of them drawing management lessons from ancient Hindu texts, is to set up a unique museum on Indian business history on the campus. Business houses and global thought leaders have been sending in material for it.
"We are a school of ideas with a mission for globalising Indian thought," he insists. The world is an oyster for IIM-K students, but a good number is moving into entrepreneurship rather than taking up corporate jobs.

Take Amit Kourav, hailing from Narsinghpur, Madhya Pradesh, who graduated from IIM-K this year. He struck a deal with DC Books, Kerala's largest publisher, to start High Octane, a coffee shop with a difference, on the IIM-K campus. It sells both books and a range of hot beverages - and is often the venue of academic discussions, too.
Chatterjee delights in students like Kourav, who represent a generation bold enough to walk the extra mile.
