Review: Samsung DV300F

Smart features and value for money, but results could be better.

Samsung DV300F
Specs: 2.3-inch CCD sensor with 16 MP; 5x zoom lens 4.5~22.5mm; 1 ~ 1/2,000sec shutter speed; ISO 3200; 1280720 (30fps) video; microSD card, 3-inch rear, 1.5-inch front LCD.

It is very difficult to make an entry-level point-and-shoot camera these days, especially with the smartphones touting most of the features you see in the former. Camera makers now pack in a lot of megapixel muscle and additional features to differentiate their products from the camera phones. Hence the Samsung DV300F is called a smart camera, and rightly so.

FEATURES
This compact camera has a 1.5-inch LCD screen at the front if you are desperate to click photos of yourself. The results will be good if you have mastered the art of not being conscious while someone is clicking a picture of you, even if it is yourself. Then, there is Wi-Fi sharing to send pictures as email or post them on social networking sites. You can also download the MobileLink app to control the camera using a smartphone and share pictures directly with a compatible TV.

RESULTS
The 16MP camera has a 2.3-inch CCD Image sensor and hence the picture quality is mostly good. However, in the digital zoom end as well as in low light the results are far from impressive. We were disappointed with lack of full manual features, which is becoming pretty standard now. This is an automatic camera and the results are better when in Auto mode. For instance, it is difficult to get a sharp macro shot in the Programme mode, while the quality is good when you shift to Macro.

OVERALL
This is a good option for people who want a point-and-shoot that will satisfy their basic needs and a bit more. The DV300F can exceed this brief and considering the price that is all you could ask for. And, if you need a cheaper one, opt for the DV100 which is essentially the same camera with fewer features.

VERDICT: Smart features and value for money, but results could be better.
