Q. The biggest challenge you faced in your career

A. The acquisition of Sylvania in 2007 when the global financial crisis started. Sylvania was 1.5 times bigger than Havells, but we devised a strategy to put it through a massive restructuring and integrated it.

Q. One management lesson for young people

A. Businesses today are going through a vibrant phase, and situations are multidimensional. So, young people should be visionaries, motivational and inspirational and must be able to build a stronger team and enable them to perform.

Q. Your best teacher in business

A. My father, late Qimat Rai Gupta, is my role model. He had great leadership qualities and possessed sharp and incisive business intellect. He was a born entrepreneur and his ability to take decisions and implement them with precision always inspired me.

Q. Two essential qualities a leader must have

A. One should be able to build and nurture relationships and achieve organisational goals. He should learn from various situations in life.
