Your cover story Is Brand IIT Broken? (May 12), highlighting the deplorable condition of the IITs, should be appreciated. As an IITian myself - my son, too, passed out of IIT-B - I believe the human resource development ministry and its present head Kapil Sibal are squarely responsible. Part of the blame also goes to the directors of the IITs who, unlike their counterparts in the IIMs, have not protested. However, your report should also have brought to light the cramped and unhygienic condition of the IIT hostels. Today you will find at least 10 students in the campus hospitals at any time during a semester.
