'Your cover story on car sales was worth reading'

Skidding Hard
Your cover story on car sales (Ain't No Time to Disco, April 28) was worth reading. It has analysed quite well how and why India's car market flipped over leading to sales falling for the first time in a decade. With the entry of many new models with new features into this sector, the market has undergone a sea change. The discounts offered are so attractive, it is the real time to go in for a new car!

Salute Successful SMEs
Your package on small businesses (India's Best SMEs, April 28) will motivate the SME community to perform even better. Though this sector, like the rest of the economy, is also in the midst of a slump and facing a crisis, many within it have overcome their problems with their own efforts. There is no instant cure for the economic ills of the Indian market, but the winners will get a morale booster from the awards. The jury's selection of best SMEs is highly commendable.

Attractive Proposition
The feature on Bollywood (Avatar2, April 28) describes how the big studios and production houses in the film industry have found lowbudget movies an attractive proposition as they bring in unexpectedly high returns. The success of low-budget films has prompted them to take a new look at their business models. Now betting on big-budget films involving top actors is less than before. Film-making has gone digital, and this new technology has enabled the transfer of films to theatres through satellite, cutting costs. However, production houses should put more emphasis on keeping their films short. The international market prefers shorter films. Such films, if made well and incorporating a message, could even win an Oscar.

Modi vs Nitish

Your feature comparing Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar (Poll Dancers, Poles Apart, April 28) was timely. This is a subject that will obsess the media in the run-up to next year's elections. In a nutshell, Kumar has achieved much more than Modi, without being half as controversial. Bihar was much worse off when Kumar began than Gujarat when Modi started.
