Building India
The cover story (Deconstructing HCC, August 19) brings into focus the difficulties in investing and developing infrastructure projects, especially in a country like India. Ajit Gulabchand has taken bold steps to build the Kolkata Metro and Bandra-Worli Sealink. Though his Lavasa project, the township near Pune, is caught up in controversies, I am sure Gulabchand's vision will make it a success.
Jacob Sahayam, Thiruvananthapuram
Shortsighted Step
The Delhi Government has put the 'cash instead of rations' project on hold because people at the ground level are opposing it on a large scale. The Food and Supply Department instead of implementing its own laws, rules, orders, is trying to bring in a new system which is of no use (Old Diet, New Recipe, August 5). The PDS system in India is a full-proof system and the corruption in it is due to non-implementation of basic laws. The second reason is governance failure, which includes dereliction of duty from top to bottom.
Manmohan Singh, Delhi
Survival Formula
The cover story (How I Did It, August 5) talks about the revival of companies and is an excellent compilation. Other companies should take lessons from those which could triumph against all odds and also look out for those who failed due to their unprofessional approach.
