Sony Mobile is trying to get back the smartphone game with its new baby,
the Tipo. This is a cute looking, compact Android running on the latest operating system along with support for two SIM cards.
Sony has been clever enough to venture into the dual
SIM smartphone segment with the Tipo. Priced aggressively, the Tipo has a standby dual SIM support. This means that when a call is active on the first SIM, the second SIM card will be not available during the time, and vice-versa. Also, the smartphone runs Android 4.0 Ice-Cream Sandwich out of the box. Strangely, even the company's high phones like the Xperia S operated on Gingerbread and was only upgraded later.
The Tipo also has a 3.2-inch capacitive touch display that is responsive, though the low resolution display isn't perfect for enjoying multimedia content. Also, due to the small display, the onscreen keyboard appeared to be a bit cramped. But we got used to it soon enough. We put the Tipo through the browsing test and it passed with the flying colours. It smoothly managed to fetch our emails along with Facebook and Twitter updates. The Tipo comes across as a good device for playing music as the sound output was loud and clear.
However, imaging is not its forte. The phone has a 3.15MP camera with fixed focus. The images obtained were just about average. Unlike other sub Rs 10,000 smartphones that have 1GHz processor onboard, the Tipo manages to perform with just a 800MHz chip. There wasn't any significant lag either. Interestingly, the 1500 mAh battery lasted a day and a half with ease.
BAG IT OR JUNK IT? A worthy contender for the dual-SIM smartphone honours.
