What is Kabir Mulchandani doing these days? Well, he seems to have vanished from the face of the earth. In 1995, Mulchandani, then only 25 years old, caught the public imagination when his Baron International began selling 21-inch Akai TVs for Rs 9,999, against the average prevailing price of Rs 15,000.

The mediasavvy tycoon (he was one then) made things even easier for the middle class by exchanging old sets for Rs 5,000. The dream run ended in 1998 when his relationship with Semi-Tech Corporation, which owned Akai, broke down. He was also dogged by trouble and investigated by the Excise Department, DRI and the ED. Despite its best efforts, BT could not track him down, or find anyone who knows his whereabouts.
