Now, you can store your documents in digital locker

The locker can be accessed at digitallocker.gov.in and elocker.gov.in. Aadhar card is compulsory for creating an account on the websites.

In a move to encourage the use of digital space and reduce paper use, the government is offering free digital locker services to the public so that it is able to store important documents online.

The locker can be accessed at digitallocker.gov.in and elocker.gov.in. Aadhar card is compulsory for creating an account on the websites.

Any individual can sign up for the service by using the 12-digit Unique Identity (UID) number on his Aadhar card.

After you enter the UID number, the system will generate a one-time password (OTP) and send it to your registered mobile number. The OTP is used to validate the individual's identify.

After this, you would be redirected a web page where you will be able to upload documents such as education certificates, government identity cards, passport, PAN card, voter ID card, telephone, water and electricity bills, ration card and property tax receipts. Initially, the government will offer 10 MB free storage, which will be later increased to 1 GB.

The size of each file to be uploaded should not be more than 1 MB. Only pdf, jpg, jpeg, png, bmp and gif file types are allowed to be uploaded.

You will also be able to share documents with others through the web portal. For sharing, you have to click the 'Share' link provided against the document you would like to share.

A dialog box will pop up in which you will provide the email id of the recipient before clicking on the 'Share' button.
