The income tax department has upgraded its e-filing website with a better look and more features.
Incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in now allows taxpayers to prepare their tax returns online apart from making tax forms and software utilities available for download.
With a user-friendly interface and enhanced features, the website might enable taxpayers to skip tax intermediary websites that charge taxpayers for access to their tax filing systems. The new e-filing site allows taxpayers to submit tax returns, request for rectification of returns, view old tax returns and their acknowledgments as well as demand and check the status of tax refunds.
It also has separate registrations for chartered accountants (CAs) who provide tax-filing services. Taxpayers can add their CA to their profile and use his/her services for filing returns. When an accountant files a return on a taxpayer's behalf, it can be reviewed and rejected by the user. A legal heir can also file tax online on behalf of a deceased person.
You can modify your personal details associated with your Permanent Account Number (PAN) by using the website. For security, all activities related to your profile get notified to the registered email and/or mobile phone. A taxpayer can also opt for higher security using digital signature certificate.
The new website became operational from 9 November after keeping e-filing services suspended for six days for migrating the data.
