No consensus on GST

Fresh differences have cropped up between the Centre and the states over the proposed goods and services tax (GST).

 GST deadlock

  • Fresh differences between centre and states
  • States want differential rates for goods and services
  • 2010 deadline unlikely to be met
The states are now jockeying for differential rates of tax for goods and services along with different rates at the Centre and the states.

This goes against the Centre’s stated position on the issue.

The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers has sent its recommendations to the Centre. With little consensus on the GST model to be adopted, it appears unlikely that the deadline of April 1, 2010 will be adhered to.
