The states are now jockeying for differential rates of tax for goods and services along with different rates at the Centre and the states.

The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers has sent its recommendations to the Centre. With little consensus on the GST model to be adopted, it appears unlikely that the deadline of April 1, 2010 will be adhered to.
