Widening the net

A bird's eye view of what's hot and what's not on the goverment's policy radar.

It’s an attempt at ensuring continued and equal social security for Indian workers overseas and expatriate employees in the country. The government is considering a notification to bring expatriate employees in India into the social security net. Once the notification goes through, expatriate employees will have to park a portion of their salaries in the EPFO’s social security schemes.

These contributions will then be subject to treatment similar to the one given to Indian employees working in countries abroad. Such a process will force many of these countries to enter into totalisation agreements—basically reciprocal social security agreements—with India.
