Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos has the chops to take on the big boys

The new Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos may be a mid-range phone, but it has the chops to take on the big boys.

It is not often that a company launches a mid-segment phone that is good enough to offer serious competition to its flagship models. Samsung's new Galaxy Grand Duos does just that by looking like a mirror image of the Galaxy SIII. The Galaxy Grand comes with a 5-inch capacitive touch display and curved edges. The branding is prominent, and there is a rectangular hard button flanked by the option and back touch key for easy usage.

The touch display is smart and has good viewing angles. The touch response is impressive and, with the QWERTY keyboard, we get that actual typing feel. The TouchWiz user interface offers an apps icon at the bottom along with four other icons. There is also a small semi-circle popping out from the left panel of the screen, displaying a column with selected app icons. Operating on the android Jelly Bean operating system, the menu is divided into apps and widgets.'

Looks apart, the Grand has got serious processing power . The company has loaded the device with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz each, along with 1GB RAM. This helps the phone handle multitasking and heavy graphic games with ease. Fetching emails and web browsing is smooth, and you can even watch HD videos. Unlike flagship smartphones, this one has a dual-SIM device with call forwarding from the second connection, which makes its operations uder-friendly.

The 8MP camera captures impressive colours in natural light, even with the flash. The sound output is also distinct. You also have features like multi-window, pop-up play, smart stay and S voice, made popular by the SIII. The 2100 mAh battery lasts you a day with both SIMs working and even longer if only one SIM is functional.

BAG IT OR JUNK IT: A fine piece of hardware in this price band.
