Why candle light is good for you
Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, former actress and singer, tells you why candle light is good for you.

WE ARE WHAT WE BREATHE
The air we breathe is pivotal to our health. We get a stuffy nose or a headache in highly polluted or smoggy conditions. These put pressure on our lungs and lead to breathing disorders such as asthma or even lung cancer. While a morning walk allows you to get fresh air, an essential-oil infused candle can also work wonders. The concept of holistic health is based on healing the mind and body by engaging the senses, which is what candles do.
A MEDICAL SCIENCE
Aroma means fragrance and therapy signifies treatment. This is a form of medicine that uses plant materials, known as essential oils, and other natural aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mind, mood, cognitive function or health. The sensory preceptors in your brain, which get signals from the millions of olfactory cells in your nose, go to work when you breathe in scented air. Tiny cilia fibres on each cell have receptors that have different shapes to fit different scent molecules that hit them. These nerve cells then send a message to your brain where the limbic system, which is synced with your emotions, is stimulated. Since many of our common conditions and bad moods can be traced to an imbalance of emotions, aromatherapy is very effective for soothing conditions such as headaches, insomnia, cold-and-flu and anxiety.
SENSE THE RIGHT SCENT
Those working or studying late can benefit from lemongrass, rosemary, pine or orange. These energise the mind and help you channelise your thoughts. Insomniacs can benefit from the earthy but midly spicy aroma of valerian, a hardy perrenial flowering plant, which is known for its tranquilising effect. The cooling eucalyptus, lavender or tea tree have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that soothe swollen mucous membranes and stuffy noses or lungs.
THE METHOD
Aromatherapy candles need to be burnt for about two to three hours for the therapeutic effect of the oils to kick in.
