Staying connected on the move is the need of the hour today and carriers are cashing on this opportunity. The first phase witnessed the launch of data cards that used to plug in your laptop. This evolved further with data cards with Wi-Fi that required a power source to work - be it through a laptop or a wall charger. And now we have portable Wi-Fi devices with inbuilt battery that can be used on the move.
Honestly, this concept isn't really new. I still use my portable router with inbuilt battery which I purchased in 2010 to convert my MTS data card into Wi-Fi, to connect multiple devices on the move. The one from Tata Photon is not significantly different. It has got a neat design and is ready to use.
The Tata Photon Max Wi-Fi Duo is a compact piece of hardware that doesn't weight much. It has got various controls such as on/off, charge, etc., on the top and a microSD card slot too. Using the Wi-Fi device was simple. Just turn on the device and you are ready to go. When used for the first time, one has to select the service they have opted for (prepaid or postpaid) and then it will register on the network. These Wi-Fi devices come with a default password, which I will recommend you should change. The Wi-Fi Duo allows you to connect maximum of up to five devices.
While Tata Photon is known for its strong data card connectivity, my experience with the Tata Docomo Max Wi-Fi wasn't great. Against the company's claims to offer up to 9.8 Mbps download speed and up to 3.6 Mbps upload speed, I never even once got a chance to experience it. The maximum speed I experienced was up to 1 Mbps. The maximum speed we recorded during out speed tests was 1.2 Mbps, which isn't good considering the company claims are high. We tested this connection at different locations over the city and the experience wasn't any different. Unfortunately, the device failed to work in some of the leading coffee shops in Delhi, which was a disappointment.
The device has got a 4,400 mAh inbuilt battery, that lasted for close to a day once charged. Other than using the device for using internet connection, it can also be used as a battery pack for charging a smartphone. Tata Docomo offers various tariff plans that you can choose from.
