The fortnight’s burning question. Is the Indian Economy heading for a slowdown?

Is the Indian Economy heading for a slowdown?

Yes. D.K. Joshi, Principal Economist, CRISIL

I expect economy to slow down in the short-term. The high interest rate regime and fears of a global slowdown are likely to slow India’s economic growth to about 8 per cent. But I think, even if the economy slows down, investments will continue especially in the infrastructure sector.

No. Venugopal Dhoot, President, ASSOCHAM

I don’t think the Indian economy is heading for a slowdown. It will continue to register robust growth rate. Since Asian economies are doing reasonably well, despite the slowdown in advanced economies, India and China will continue to attract global investments. In fact, I think India has the potential to even beat China over the next few years.

Yes. Arun Kejriwal, Director, KRIS Capital

The rate at which the economy has grown over the last six-to-eight quarters is unsustainable. I think factors like the US slowdown and rising oil prices point towards a likely slowdown over the coming months. Also, issues like uncertain monsoon conditions can make things worse.
