What happened to Taneja aerospace and Aviation’s (TAAL’s) plans of building light planes in India?

Well, the plans are on track. It has been building the six-seater twin-engine P68 Series since 1996, making it the first private sector company in India to make light aircraft. So far, Taneja has sold 14 propeller aircraft, each of which now costs about Rs 3.5 crore.

Its R&D unit is, nevertheless, purring, but that’s more to improvise on P68 birds, than to make corporate jets. Then, as Cessna’s sales representative in India, it aggressively promotes Cessna Business Jets in the country. It has also established a service facility for Cessna jets at its 240-acre base at Hosur in Karnataka, 50 km from Bangalore.

Santosh Deshpande, Executive Vice President, TAAL, says there are no plans to build corporate jets as of now. Instead, the 15-year-old company is beefing up its Hosur base to make it a formidable MRO hub.
