PC Sales: Boom Continues

Desktop sales, which grew a respectable 19 per cent (from 4,614,724 to 5,490,591 units), were completely overshadowed by the laptop market.
PC sales (desktops and laptops) grew 26 per cent in 2006-07 to 6.34 million over the figure for the previous 12 months, driven by strong growth in the notebook and replacement market. According to statistics released by the Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), the apex body for the hardware industry, and research agency IMRB, PC sales grew from 5,046,668 units in 2005-06 to 6,431,451 units in 2006-07.

Desktop sales, which grew a respectable 19 per cent (from 4,614,724 to 5,490,591 units), were completely overshadowed by the laptop market, which rocketed ahead by 97 per cent (from 431,834 units to 850,860 units) over the period under review. MNC vendors made significant inroads into the cost-sensitive Indian market, accounting for 39 per cent of sales.
