Q. What are the challenges that Indian telecos face from an energy efficiency point of view?
A.
Energy constitutes the third largest component of any mobile operator’s operating expenses and over 80 per cent of this comes from the network infrastructure. The big challenge is to look at the total cost of ownership by examining sustainable resources like solar, wind and other green solutions rather than diesel.

Q. What should the priorities for service providers be?
A.
They should look at renewable sources for powering telecom networks. The total cost of ownership of diesel-powered generators is very high, and, therefore, unsustainable over the long term.

Q. But, aren’t the capital costs of energyefficient networks higher?
A.
If you factor in installation and maintenance costs, solar-powered networks are better than diesel-powered ones. An average operator with 4,000 base stations in rural areas can potentially save up to 43 GWh of energy per year. This translates to 22,000 tonnes less of CO2 emission by GSM base stations manufactured by us, which consume the least power in the industry.
