The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed on Thursday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi, which is celebrated with much fervour across the country, particularly in western India.

National Stock Exchange (NSE), the world's 12th largest bourse in terms of market capitalization, will also remain closed on account of the festival.

Trading on both these exchanges will re-commence on Friday (September 18).

On Wednesday, the benchmark BSE Sensex closed over 258 points higher on a flurry of buying by investors amid a firming trend overseas ahead of the Fed's rate decision this week. On similar lines, the NSE Nifty closed 70.05 points or 0.89 per cent higher at Rs 7,899.15.

The public festivities around the 10-day long Ganesh Chaturthi, celebrated extensively in Maharashtra, was introduced by Bhausaheb Laxman Javale - a doctor as well as a sympathizer with the Indian revolutionary movement - in 1892.
