M-commerce to be the next game changer, says HomeShop18 CEO

M-commerce is the new buzzword in online shopping. The ability to conduct business through mobile phones is going to be the next game changer in India.

The growth of mobile commerce has left many brands and retailers thinking how this medium can be leveraged. According to a recent report by telecom regulator Trai, almost 50 per cent mobile subscribers access the Internet on their mobile phones.

India is one of the fastest growing markets for mobile phones. Touted as the next big thing in shopping, m-commerce is already beginning to find its base with over 449 million Indians accessing the Web (GPRS/2G/3G/CDMA-Data) from their mobile phones.

Falling prices of smartphones , affordable rentals of Internet plans and increased digital literacy are some of the reasons why mobile Internet penetration has risen significantly in the last few years. The speed of mobile penetration is 10 times faster than the PC penetration.

As per the Neilsen report, penetration of smartphones in India stands at 9 per cent of 929 million users growing at 50 per cent year-on-year compared with 55.5 per cent in the US. And over 75 per cent of these smartphone users access Internet on their device at least twice a day.

M-commerce is not just about need; it is also a lot about convenience.
