COVID-19 pandemic: 10 of the worst-hit countries

The novel coronavirus is wreaking havoc in the lives of millions with 155 million active cases currently . While some countries are looking forward to welcoming foreign tourists soon, others are struggling with deaths due to lack of resources, beds, vaccines, oxygen and more. Here are the 10 worst-hit countries in the world and how they are coping with the virus.

United States

The United States reported some 33,321,244 active COVID cases as on May 6. The pandemic has claimed some 593,148 lives in the country.

India

India's total number of active COVID cases stands at 21,077,410 (21.1 M) with a death toll of 2,30,168  (230K) so far. Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed that states should be given required help and guidance to ramp up healthcare infrastructure. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal thanked PM Modi as Delhi received 730 metric tonnes of oxygen on May 5.

Brazil

Brazil has a total number of 14.9 million COVID cases with 414,645 deaths. The health system in the country has collapsed badly. The country is facing oxygen shortage with ICU beds fully occupied already. Both the healthcare staff and equipment are lacking.

France

Total number of covid cases in France stands at 5,706,378 ( 5.71M) with death toll amounting to 105,631. A few days back, the country reported the first case of Indian COVID variant in the country.

Turkey

Turkey has reported 4,955,594 COVID cases. The country's death toll stands at 41,883.

Russia

Russia reported 4,855,128 covid cases so far and its death toll stands at 112,246. As per the Hindustan Times report, the country has decided to ramp up the production of vaccines to more than 50 lakh next month and 1 crore by July.

United Kingdom

Total number of active COVID cases in the United States stands at 4,425,940. The death toll due to coronavirus is 127,570 so far.  The country has announced support for Covid-19 vaccine patent waiver in India.

Italy

Total COVID cases in the country stands at 4,070,400 with 122,005 deaths so far. As per the news, Italy will allow foreign tourists in the country as soon as in this month itself. Prime minister Mario Draghi has announced that the country is "ready to welcome back the world".

Spain

Spain reached its vaccination goal by vaccinating at least five million people in the first week of May. The next in line for vaccination are some 10 million who are supposed to receive jab by the first week of June. And 15 million by the third of coming June.
The total COVID cases in the country so far stands at 3,551,262. The death toll due to covid stands at 78,566.

Germany

As the number of covid cases in the country falls, parts of the country are looking for loosening of lockdown restrictions. Infection rates are, however, high in some 16 federal countries.
Total covid cases in the country stands at 3,469,448. The country's death toll stands at 84,593.
