Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group has brought the focus back on the Tiny House Movement that has gripped the world, more so during the pandemic. Not only did he share a tweet calling tiny houses 'trend in the making' but also shared a photo of a mobile home atop an autorickshaw. Here's why the world is turning to Tiny Homes and the people who have adopted this style of living.

A Tamil Nadu-based young architect, N.G Arun Prabhu, received praises from businessman Anand Mahindra, when he built a portable home on top of an auto rickshaw costing Rs 1 lakh. The Chairman of Mahindra Group shared pictures of the unique mobile home on Twitter, which became the only thing people could talk about that day.

All about small footprints

Mahindra referred to IKEA's tiny-built homes calling them a 'trend in making'. Describing tiny houses, he said that tiny homes were all about small-footprints and could be mobile if kept on a trailer. Sharing Joe Pompliano's tweet, Mahindra asked twitterati what could be the best term to describe them: 'Home-on-the-run?' or 'Living on the loose'?

Tiny houses are nothing but  houses reduced to the size of a walk-in-closet. One of the best things about tiny houses is that you don't have to hire a huge team of contractors to get it built. 'Smaller, more energy-efficient houses are appealing to a growing population of minimalists and resource-conscious individuals,' says WEF. People across the globe long for a lifestyle that frees them of material goods and gives them the ability to travel. Also, skyrocketing rents and mortgage, are also making people apprehensive of buying large houses.
One of the many great advantages of having a tiny house is that you can pick your house and carry it along with you along with all your personal belongings.

Who is selling Tiny Houses in India?

Leading furniture-maker IKEA is the first to jump onto the Tiny-House Movement bandwagon. It has initiated the Tiny Home Project, a design/build exercise that fits a home into a 187-sq-ft, off-grid house on wheels. It has partnered with Vox Creative and contracted RV and tiny home builder Escape for the Vista Boho XL model. The tiny house is fitted with solar panels, a composting toilet and an on-demand RV water heater.

Products used by IKEA to build a Tiny Home

The inside of the house is done up with IKEA's sustainable, energy-efficient as well as multifunctional products. The aim is to use renewable, reusable and recycled materials to create a beautiful as well as  functional space.

IKEA's Tiny House Project

The design and build process for the Tiny House Project began in late 2019 and was completed in April 2020. IKEA initially planned to take the tiny home on a nationwide tour but the plans were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
