Who will deliver grocery to your doorstep? Brands vie for consumer's wallet

Food delivery startup Swiggy is the latest entrant in the grocery and household items delivery space.As coronavirus pushed people to stay at home, the dependence on home delivery of essential supplies increased. Consumers now prefer buying online over venturing out for daily needs.This has given a boost to established players and some new ones have entered the category too. Here are the brands that are jostling for the consumer's wallet and mindpace in the online delivery market.

InstaMart

Food delivery app Swiggy has come up with a plan to launch InstaMart to deliver grocery and household items at doorstep.InstaMart, a chain of virtual convenience stores, will deliver grocery and household items within 45 minutes. InstaMart will address the unmet grocery needs of the 'time-pressed' and 'convenience-seeking' consumer. Moreover, it will also offer day and night services (7 am-12 am) across categories such as instant ice-creams, meat, fruits, vegetables among others.

Swiggy Stores

Swiggy is not a new entrant in the grocery-delivery business. In fact, it has been doing grocery delivery for over 12 months now.
In February 2019, Swiggy launched its 'Swiggy Stores' feature that was aimed at delivering daily essentials including groceries to customers.
It also has tie-ups with various offline retailers like Vishal Mega Mart and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands such as Marico for grocery service.

Flipkart

Walmart-owned Flipkart on July 28, announced the launch of 90-minute delivery for groceries with its new hyperlocal delivery service 'Flipkart Quick'.
The new 'Quick' delivery service will offer over 2000 products in the host of categories including grocery, meat, electronic accessories, stationery items, and home accessories.
Flipkart Quick will deliver orders in 90 minutes from the time it is placed. Consumers can also book a 2-hour slot for their order between 6 am to midnight. The minimum delivery fee charged would be Rs 29.

Grofers

Besides these big names, Softbank-backed online grocery seller Grofers has also expanded its grocery-delivery business amid the coronavirus pandemic. Grofers has announced a nine-day sales scheme and Rs 50 crore working capital and advance payments support for partners manufacturing products locally. The company aims to sell 90 million items produced by its partners including 55 million items that are produced locally.

JioMart

Reliance Jio backed JioMart started its operations in May this year with grocery and food items only. It has reportedly become the largest e-grocery in the country with 400,000 daily orders, which is significantly higher than any other service.

Dunzo

Google-backed Hyperlocal delivery startup has grown well in the last few months as more and more people started ordering essentials online.
It is the first Indian startup Google directly invested in. The startup also has a tie-up with Google Pay to deliver essentials with the Dunzo app.

Big Basket

Popular grocery-delivering app Big Basket has also ramped up its delivery services across the major states. Even before the pandemic broke out, consumers were heavily dependent on its services in the metro cities. Its 'BB Daily' business, a subscription-based service, is widely popular for daily household items and grocery.
Now the startup delivers without any fee for orders upward of Rs 1,200.

Amazon

Amazon also offers a variety of daily need items and groceries under its label 'Amazon Pantry'.
It recently came up with its most-awaited Amazon Prime Day sale with a host of discounts and exciting offers on items across various categories. A discount of 60 per cent was offered on Amazon Pantry to stock up groceries and other essentials.
