Naresh Goyal steps down as Chairman of Jet Airways board
Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal has reportedly stepped down as the Chairman of the company's board. The decision came as the debt-ridden Jet Airways is closing in on a rescue deal with Etihad Airways, news agency Reuters reported quoting sources. Speculations were rife that founder Naresh Goyal would exit Jet Airways due to differences with the lenders and a resolution plan which prescribed the same in order to save the embattled airline. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that Union Cabinet has approved the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019, a move which will bring persons living in remote and inaccessible areas under reservation ambit. This will provide 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections, which includes Scheduled Castes, Schedule Tribes, in educational institutions and government job in addition to the existing reservation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Supreme Court allows arrest of Amrapali group CMD in cheating case
The Supreme Court has allowed the Delhi Police to arrest Amrapali group CMD Anil Sharma in a cheating case. In its order on Thursday, the apex court also gave its consent to the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police to arrest Amrapali directors Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar in the case.Around 42,000 homebuyers have filed petitions before the Supreme Court, seeking possession of the flats they booked in Amrapali group's projects.
India happy to know Pakistan is releasing downed pilot
The Indian government was "happy" that Pakistan had decided to return its captured air force pilot and it looked forward to his return, defence officials told reporters. Wing Commander Abhinandan, who was captured by Pakistan's army on Wednesday, will return to India on Friday, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan told the country's parliament.
Indian economic growth slips to 6.6 percent, slower than expected
India's economy lost momentum in the final quarter of 2018, reducing the annual rate of growth to 6.6 percent, the slowest pace in five quarters and much less than expected, according to a Reuters report. The slowdown may be bad news for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he seeks a second term in office at a general election due by May. Canada's flag carrier Air Canada Wednesday temporarily suspended its flights to India due to the closure of Pakistani airspace, amid escalating tensions between the two countries. Pakistan Wednesday closed its airspace for commercial flights and suspended flight operations across major airports.
Pakistan suspends Samjhauta Express from Delhi amid escalating tensions with India
Pakistan has suspended services of the Samjhauta Express from its side between Wagah to Lahore. The train has, however, not been suspended from India. Indian Railways said that the Samjhauta Express departed on time on Wednesday with 27 passengers onboard. Northern Railways said, "The train running from Delhi to Attari in India left at 11:20 pm Wednesday. There are three Pakistanis and 24 Indian nationals aboard the train." According to government sources, the Samjhauta Express had reached Attari from Delhi.
