bt_logoAbout Bajaj Auto

Two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto is among India’s leading automotive companies. The Pune headquartered firm is primarily known for its various two-wheeler and three-wheeler models. Bajaj Auto has a rich history that can be traced back to 1945. In that year, Indian businessman, Jamnalal Bajaj founded Bachraj Trading Corporation Private Limited which would later be known as Bajaj Auto Limited. Initially, the company focused on selling imported vehicles. In 1948, a year, after India gained independence, the company initiated sales of imported two and three-wheelers from the Italian brand Vespa. The company took a bold step forward in 1958 when it applied for a government licence in order to manufacture motor scooters and auto-rickshaws in India. It received this license a year later and rebranded to Bajaj Auto Private Ltd. A year later, the Bajaj Auto became a public company. 1971 was the year when Bajaj Auto commenced independent production of three-wheeler such as good carriers. A year later Bajaj Auto launched its scooter, Bajaj Chetak which would revolutionize the Indian two-wheeler market and prove to be a monumental success for the company. Following the success of Chetak, the company launched a few more scooter brands like Priya and Super during the 1980s. Bajaj Auto ventured into the motorcycle market in 1986 with the launch of the KB100. Bajaj Auto produced the motorcycle in collaboration with two-wheeler giant Kawasaki of Japan. In the 1990s, Bajaj Auto worked with international firm Kubota of Japan to develop diesel engines for three-wheelers. The company also worked with Tokyo R&D to develop ungeared scooters and mopeds. Bajaj Auto opened its third manufacturing plant at Chakan, Pune in 1998. The following year, Bajaj Auto would produce its first CNG auto-rickshaws. Bajaj Auto further expanded its portfolio in 2007 after it purchased a stake in Austrian motorcycle firm KTM in order to introduce KTM bikes in India. 2007 was a major year for Bajaj Auto as it demerged into three corporate entities. These were Bajaj Finserv Limited (BFL), Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) and Bajaj Holdings and Investment Ltd (BHIL). In 2009, Bajaj Auto exited the scooter segment after declining market share. In 2017, Bajaj and Kawasaki ended their sales and services partnership in India. In 2020, Bajaj Auto launched its first electric vehicle, Bajaj Chetak EV. As of March 2023, Bajaj Auto continues to be among the largest manufacturers and marketers of two and three-wheelers in the country.
