Mahindra and Mahindra Limited, also known as M&M, is a leading Indian multinational conglomerate. The company is primarily known for manufacturing utility vehicles and automobiles such as SUVs. The company is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. M&M began in 1945 when two industrialist brothers - J.C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra - came together with Ghulam Mohammed to establish ‘Mahindra and Mohammed’. During its early years, M&M operated as a steel trading company in Mumbai. M&M entered the automobile segment in 1947 when it got the license to manufacture Willys Jeeps from the US-based firm Willys-Overland Corporation. Partition affected M&M as Ghulam Mohammed left for Pakistan and the company was rebranded to Mahindra and Mahindra’ in 1948. The company expanded its portfolio in 1961 after Mahindra and Mahindra joined hands with US based company International Harvester to manufacture tractors in India. The following year, M&M and French firm Ugine Kuhlmann joined hands to set up Mahindra Ugine Steel Company in order to manufacture alloy. In 1977, the prominent Indian firm International Tractor Company of India amalgamated with M&M and became part of its tractor division. M&M ventured into the telecom sector and IT industry in 1986. It formed a joint venture with British Telecom called Mahindra British Telecom. This JV would later transform into what is known today as Tech Mahindra. In the 1990s, Mahindra and Mahindra entered the financial services sector with M&M Financial Service Limited and the hospitality sector with Mahindra Holidays and Resorts. Its first resort opened in 1996 in Kerala. Automobile major Mahindra and Mahindra after expanding its portfolio underwent a rebranding exercise in the year 2000 and another one in 2022. As of March 2022, Mahindra and Mahindra is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in India. The company operates in more than a hundred countries and has a workforce of over 2, 00,000 workers.
