Bajaj Finance, headquartered in Pune, is one of the largest non-banking financial institutions in the country. Across India, Bajaj Finance has a presence in over 2600 cities and towns. The history of Bajaj Finance can be traced back to 1987 when it was set up by Rahul Bajaj who at that time was the Chairman of Bajaj Auto, one of India's leading two-wheeler manufacturers. The following year, Bajaj Auto Finance was registered as a public company. Ten years later in 1998, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) registered Bajaj Finance as a Non-Bank firm. 1998 was a significant year for Bajaj Finance as it stepped into the business of Durable Finance. To this end, it joined hands with Godrej GE Appliances, LG and Blue Star. A year later Bajaj Finance teamed up with BPL to finance its consumer durables, however, refrigerators were not included. 2007 was a major year for Bajaj Auto as it demerged into three separate firms. Bajaj Auto Finance was now a company under Bajaj Finserv. In 2010, Bajaj Auto Finance was rechristened as Bajaj Finance Limited which remains the name of the firm. Two years later, Bajaj Finance introduced the country's first EMI (Existing Member Identification) Card and Flexisaver. The purpose behind Bajaj Finance’s introduction of this card was to help customers purchase products on easy EMIs without needing a credit card. In 2017, Bajaj Finance purchased a 10.83 per cent stake in Mobikwik, an online payments firm. The same year, structural changes took place at Bajaj Finance as Bajaj Finserv Direct Limited was carved-out of the firm. This was done in order to enable customers to transact digitally and to further enhance the end-to-end online experience. Bajaj Finance also expanded into mortgage loans with another subsidiary Bajaj Housing Finance Limited. Another wholly-owned subsidiary Bajaj Financial Securities Limited commenced operations two years later in 2019. As of March 2022, Bajaj Finance has a customer base of over 66 million.
