Bharti Airtel is one of India’s leading telecommunications firms. Bharti Airtel is headquartered in the national capital - New Delhi. The history of Bharti Airtel can be traced back to 1995. In that year, Indian industrialist Sunil Bharti Mittal incorporated Bharti Tele-Ventures Limited. Initially, Bharti Telecom owned a hundred per cent stake in Bharti Tele-Ventures. Brand ‘Airtel’ commenced operations in 1995 when cellular services were launched in Delhi for the first time. The following year Airtel expanded its services to the neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh. As the years passed, Airtel expanded to other states and regions till eventually, it was available all across India. In the late 1990s, Bharti Telecom and British Telecom came together to launch VSAT and internet services in India. In 1998, Madhya Pradesh was the state in which Bharti Airtel launched its first fixed-line services in India. Bharti Airtel, in another step forward, issued its Initial Public Offer (IPO) in 2002 and was thus listed on Indian stock exchanges. Bharti Airtel in 2003 brought all its cellular phone operations across the country under a single brand name - ‘Airtel’. The following year, Bharti Airtel launched the popular calling feature ‘Hello Tunes’ in India. In 2010, Airtel purchased the African business of Zain Telecom which is a Kuwait-based telecom firm. Airtel underwent a rebranding exercise in 2011. The telecom major introduced a new logo and brand identity which is currently in use. In order to launch 4G services in India, Airtel and US-based firm Qualcomm came together in 2012. This helped Bharti Airtel become the first telecom company to launch 4G mobile data services in 2015. The Indian arm of Telenor Communications in 2018 was acquired by Bharti Airtel in an effort to further expand its hold on the Indian telecommunications market. The following year, telecom major Bharti Airtel merged with Tata Teleservices which transferred its telecommunications assets over to Airtel.
