Hindalco Industries is among India’s leading aluminum and copper manufacturing companies. Hindalco Industries is primarily known for its various aluminum and copper products. This Mumbai headquartered company is a subsidiary of the Indian multinational conglomerate Aditya Birla Group. Hindalco Industries had a humble beginning with a single aluminum manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh. The company was incorporated on December 15, 1958 as Hindustan Aluminum Corporation Ltd. Indian businessman GD Birla established India's first integrated aluminum facility at Renukoot, Uttar Pradesh in 1962 and thus Hindalco Industries officially began commercial operations. Production at this facility was supported by a captive thermal power plant at Renusagar, Uttar Pradesh which started operations in 1967. Over the next two decades, Hindalco Industries would grow to become a leading manufacturer of aluminum and would expand its portfolio to produce copper products. In 1989, the company rebranded and changed its name from Hindustan Aluminum Corporation to Hindalco Industries Limited to better represent its expanded portfolio. 2000s saw three major acquisitions by Hindalco Industries. Also in 2000, Hindalco Industries purchased a large stake in Canada-based firm Alcan Aluminum Ltd. 2007 was the year when Hindalco Industries acquired US-based aluminum firm Novelis Inc. These acquisitions help the company become one of the largest producers of aluminum in all of Asia as well as become India's leading copper producer. 2020 was the year when Hindalco Industries purchased a controlling stake in Aleris Corporation through its subsidiary Novelis. This acquisition solidified Hindalco Industries’ position as one of the world’s largest flat-rolled products player and recycler of aluminum.
