JSW Steel Limited is one of India’s prominent steel companies. It is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. JSW Steel is a leading producer of steel in the country and is the flagship company of the Indian conglomerate JSW Group. The story of JSW Steel dates back to 1982 when the steel-maker Jindal Group established its first plant at Vasind near Mumbai after the group got its hands on Piramal Steel Limited through acquisition. Piramal Steel ran a mini steel mill at Tarapur, Maharashtra. Post-acquisition, Jindal Group renamed the firm as Jindal Iron and Steel Company (JISCO). Another Jindal Group subsidiary, Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited (JVSL) - was established in 1994. JVSL’s first steel plant was located at Toranagallu, Karnataka. Thus, JSW Steel as it is currently known was formed. Three years later, JSW Steel entered into a joint agreement with a steel plant in Georgia named Geo Steel LLC. A year later, JSW Steel came together with Japan's JFE Steel Corp to sign a strategic agreement to produce automotive steel products. Steel-maker JSW Steel purchased Indian multinational conglomerate Welspun Maxsteel Limited in 2014. Five years later, JSW Steel purchased the bankrupt steel company Bhushan Power & Steel. JSW Steel further expanded as it purchased a controlling stake in steel-making firm Neotrex Steel in 2021. In the following year, the JSW Steel Board of Directors approved the merger of subsidiaries Creixent Special Steels Limited and JSW Ispat Special Products Limited with JSW Steel.
