Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, also known as, POWERGRID, is an Indian state-owned firm that deals primarily with the transmission of power across the country. POWERGRID was set up on October 23, 1989 when the National Power Transmission Corporation Limited was set up under the Companies Act of 1956. The company was set up to operate, take ownership and maintain high-voltage transmission systems across the country. The company expanded after the transmission assets of Nuclear Power Corporation Limited were handed over to National Power Transmission Corporation Limited in 1991. In October 1992, the firm rebranded and rechristened itself to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited also known as POWERGRID. 1992 was a big year for POWERGRID as the transmission systems owned and operated by NTPC, NHPC and North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited were handed over to Power Grid Corporation. The following year, Power Grid Corporation further expanded as it got hold of the transmission assets of Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited. Power Grid Corporation inked its initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Power Ministry in 1994 and took over the Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre in the same year. The Eastern Regional Despatch Centre and the North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre were taken over by POWERGRID for management in 1995. 2001 was the year Power Grid Corporation diversified in the telecom business. In 2003, POWERGRID entered into one of the first joint ventures with Tata Power Company Limited under the PPP (Public Private Partnership) program. The JV was constituted for implementing the transmission systems that were associated with Tata Hydro-Electric Project. POWERGRID established a wholly-owned subsidiary Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) in 2009. As of March 2023, POWERGRID manages the inter-state transmission of power across India. The company operates over 1, 70,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and owns 272 substations.
