Sun Pharmaceutical Industries or Sun Pharma is India’s leading pharmaceutical firm which is known for the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). The company is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Sun Pharma was established in 1983 by Indian businessman Dilip Shanghvi. In the same year, Sun Pharma opened its first manufacturing facility for the production of tablets and capsules at Vapi, Gujarat, India. Initially, the company manufactured five psychiatry products. In 1991, Sun Pharma established its first research centre. In 1994, Sun Pharma launched its Initial Public Offer (IPO). In 1997, Sun Pharma purchased stakes in pharmaceutical companies, TDPL and MJ Pharma. In the same year, Sun Pharma completed its first international acquisition of US firm Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories. In 1999, Sun Pharma acquired Milmet Labs. In 2000, Sun Pharma acquired Pradeep Drug Company. In 2004, Sun Pharma acquired Phlox Pharma (India) and niche brands from Women’s First Healthcare (USA). In 2007, Sun Pharma demerged Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC) into a separate entity. In 2008, Sun Pharma acquired Chattem Chemicals Inc, USA. In 2010, Sun Pharma acquired a controlling stake in Israel-based Taro Pharmaceuticals. In 2014, Sun Pharma acquired the Indian multinational pharmaceutical company Ranbaxy Laboratories. In 2021, Sun Pharma forayed into the nutrition bar segment in India with the launch of Revital NXT. In 2022, Sun Pharma acquired Uractiv portfolio from Fiterman Pharma in Romania. As of March 2023, Sun Pharma has more than 40 manufacturing facilities and provides medicines to more than 100 countries across the globe.
