Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is among the world’s leading information technology (IT) firms. TCS is primarily known for its IT, consulting, and business outsourcing services which it provides to clients not just in India but across the world. The company had humble beginnings as a small division of leading Indian conglomerate Tata Group. Currently, it is one of the largest firms in the country by market capitalization. TCS began in 1968 when Tata Sons, the holding firm of Tata Group, set up Tata Computer Systems, a division that would offer computer services to the various companies within the Tata Group. The undertaking was carried out by a team of engineers led by Faqir Chand Kohli, who is known today as the co-founder of TCS. The division signed its first external contract in 1971. The objective was to build inventory and stock control systems for power companies in Iran. 1972 was the year when the firm partnered with US firm Burroughs Corporation to distribute and support Burroughs products in India. TCS established its first sales office in New York in 1979, and one of its initial clients was International Group Information Corporation. In 1981, TCS established India’s first software research centre, Tata Research Development and Design Centre (TRDDC) in Pune. 1989 was the year when TCS signed a $10 million deal with Swiss Securities Clearing Corporation. 2000 was a significant year for TCS as it inked a $100 million contract with US-based GE Medical Systems. This is one of the biggest deals ever signed by an Indian IT service firm. In 2004, TCS issued its Initial Public Offer (IPO) and became a publicly listed company. TCS was the first Indian IT company to venture into the business of bioinformatics. It did so in 2005. In 2011, TCS entered the small and medium enterprises market with its cloud-based service iON. As of March 2022, TCS had a total headcount of over 5, 90,000 workers. The workforce is diverse with over 153 nationalities represented.
