The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is
likely to issue new guidelines to be followed by telecom firms which lost licences after the Supreme Court verdict on the 2G spectrum case.
To protect interests of mobile phone users, Trai is examining issues such as selling recharge coupons and new connections by service providers. According to sources, Trai is likely to take the decision soon.
After the verdict, companies that are set to lose on account of the cancellation of licences are Uninor (joint venture between Unitech and Telenor of Norway), Loop Telecom, Sistema Shyam (joint venture between Shyam and Sistema of Russia), Etisalat DB (joint venture between Swan and Etisalat of UAE), S Tel, Videocon, Tatas and Idea.
Though consumers have the option of portability, Trai is of the opinion that many customers are unaware that the existing provider cannot extend service if it fails to obtain licence in
the fresh 2G auction, sources said.
