Arcelor Mittal begins land acquisition process for steel plant in Jharkhand

The land registration for the proposed steel plant of Arcelor Mittal has begun in Kasmar Petrawar in Bokaro district since December last, Jharkhand Industry Secretary A P Singh said.

The land acquisition process for Arcelor Mittal 's proposed Rs 42,000 crore green field integrated steel plant in Jharkhand has already begun, a senior state government official said on Tuesday.

The land registration for the proposed steel plant of Arcelor Mittal has begun in Kasmar Petrawar in Bokaro district since December last, Jharkhand Industry Secretary A P Singh said.

He was in Adityapur (Jharkhand) to take part in the inauguration of Hi-Tech Design Lab and foundation stone laying ceremony of Hi-Tech Testing Lab building.

The land acquisition process had been tardy due to Panchayat election and the National Games that concluded last month but the process has now got momentum, Singh said on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony.

Asked how many of acres of land has been registered so far, the Industry secretary said it was below 50 acres and attributed the slow pace of land registration process due to panchayat election and National Games.

Singh said the construction work would not begin till the steel giant acquired at least 500 acres of land as 500 to 550 acres land was required even for a million tonne capacity steel plant whereas Arcelor Mittal has proposed to set up a 10 million tonne capacity steel plant in Jharkhand.

Arcelor Mittal requires 2,200 acres land to start work for the first phase, he said. It had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Jharkhand government for the proposed steel plant in October 2005.
