Asus G75VW could give the Alienware a run for its money

Built like a weapon of mass destruction and capable of conjuring up that additional dimension of depth, the Asus G75VW could give the Alienware a run for its money.

If you want to know what Batman's suit actually feels like, you should run your hands on the Asus G75VW gaming laptop. Built like a Tomahawk with a shot-touch finish like an oilskin, this laptop looks and feels like a weapon of mass destruction, pretty much what it is expected to do.

DESIGN
With a 17.3-inch Full HD LED screen, this laptop is large and intimidating. It is also, like most other gaming laptops , rather heavy at 4.5 kg. The slight angle on the body make it an ergonomical design for gamers and the soft palm rest and isolated arrow keys only add to this comfort. The keypad is very responsive, but we thought a rubber finish here too would have been a nice touch. The screen is very soothing on the eye and that is because of the anti-glare panel, which will let you play for hours on end.

3D
It is unlikely that anyone would want to play games with this laptop without using the 3D. Yes, this one comes loaded with NVIDIA 3D Vision 2, 3D Active Shutter and 3D LightBoost technology so that you can plug in the glasses and take all your gaming to another dimension. And, this is where it will leave the competition behind, for the 3D is definitely best in class as far as clarity and quality is concerned. But long hours of 3D gaming can be stressful, as we realised within half an hour.

PERFORMANCE
The G75VW is powered by 3rd generation Intel Core i7 CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M/670M GPU with 2GB/3GB of GDDR5 VRAM. The Ivy Bridge processor makes the laptop extremely fast off the blocks, if needed. Yes, instant on is optional and need be activated only when needed. Similarly, there are high-performance and battery save modes to choose from as required. Thanks to the SSD drive, it can do a 2-second start up when asked to. And that is very neat for a machine this size. While this is a great gaming laptop , it can also double as powerful desktop replacement if the need arises. Like in most gaming laptops, battery doesn't seem to be one of the G75VW's strengths as we could not manage more than two hours of gaming on a full charge. The redeeming factor is that this is not a very portable unit and will likely be kept plugged in most of the time.

GAMING
We tested the laptop with Command & Conquer 3 as well as Need For Speed Most Wanted, both in 3D. There was never any lag or delay and the performance was top notch throughout. The unit also did not heat up at any point of time, most probably because of the very quiet dual fan system. There is a Republic of Gamers button to activate the 3D, though we needed to do a restart at times to get the depth dimension to work. The sound also packs a punch using the built-in subwoofer and SonicMaster technology and you don't really need to use additional headphones.

WHY WE FELL FOR IT: Superb build quality and amazing 3D
