Emerging techs for wireless sharing of data
Bluetooth is a marvel for wireless sharing of data. but now there are
some other wonderful emerging technologies that achieve the same
purpose.

DLNA
WHAT IS IT: DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance. It allows two devices with similar technology to share content over a wired/wireless network.
HOW DOES IT WORK: Two DLNA devices should be connected to the same network like the one used for sharing broadband connection at home. The devices then automatically locate other DLNA-enabled devices on the same network and pair with them instantly for seamless media streaming. This works across different rooms in a house so long as the gadgets are connected to the network. Along with photo, video and music streaming, it can be used for wireless printing as well.
DEVICES: Nokia N8, Samsung Galaxy SII, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, Sony Tablet P, Sony Tablet S, Western Digital TV Live Hub, Sony LED TVs, etc.
AIRPLAY
WHAT IS IT: This is a proprietary technology from Apple that allows users to share video, music and photos wirelessly from their iPhone, iPod, iPad or iTunes to an HDTV and speakers.
HOW DOES IT WORK: AirPlay works in exactly the same way as DLNA as this technology requires both the devices to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Once done, tapping the AirPlay icon from videos, Safari, Photos and music (depending upon the streaming) and selecting the available device instantly lets you stream the content. While the latest iOS devices support AirPlay, a regular speaker or HDTV can only be connected with the help of either Apple TV or Airport Express. So while buying a new speaker or an audio system, people owning iOS devices should consider buying things that are AirPlay enabled.
DEVICES: Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, JBL are the featured partners for AirPlay.
WI-FI DIRECT
WHAT IS IT: Similar to DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct is an upcoming technology that allows wireless media streaming and sharing between two Wi-Fi Direct-enabled devices independently, that is, without depending on any wired or wireless network.
HOW DOES IT WORK: This technology works without a Wi-Fi network. When two Wi-Fi Direct-enabled devices are brought close to each other, the pair signal to each other and invite a secure connection. Once the two devices are connected, a user can use this to share content, synch data, socialise, play games, play audio and video. It is a much faster and quicker way of sharing data between two gadgets.

AIRPLAY
ALLSHARE: IN COMBINATION WITH BLUETOOTH While Samsung's products come loaded with their own proprietary technology under the name AllShare, users also have the option of connecting to audio speakers wirelessly. This can be done by plugging a Bluetooth audio adapter to the speakers that connects to the device wirelessly while playing streaming music. |
